CANTINA VIGNAIOLI DEL MORELLINO DI SCANSANO

http://www.vignaiolidiscansano.it

Cantina Cooperativa Vignaioli del Morellino di Scansano, situated in Scansano, southern Tuscany, was founded in 1972 and has always had the goal not just to produce high quality products but also to preserve the territory and its image, for the benefit of the entire local community.
Before our winery was born, producers found it hard to distribute their wines and as a consequence sold their grapes to other more renown areas. In 1972 a handful of wine producers met and that’s where it all began. From that sparkle, in 1978 came the Doc appellation.
Today we have around 170 members including many young producers (35 % under 40 yrs old) and 30% female entrepreneurs. Their vineyards spread over around 700 hectares in the production area of Morellino di Scansano. Members are involved throughout the year, through training, through directions they receive from the winery agronomist based on the characteristics of each plot of land, and through awards and penalties. They must follow strict rules but they also participate in the fact that the production of high quality wine starts in the vineyard so that harvest time is only the peak of a one-year-long job.

The winery’s current production of Morellino di Scansano Docg represents around 20% of the overall production of the appellation. The wine range includes different versions of Morellino di Scansano that represent the different features of the members’ vineyards. With the introduction of Doc Maremma Toscana we also added new red wines to our range, including one with autochthonous grape varieties (in this case Alicante and Ciliegiolo), called Capoccia and Capoccia Riserva, and a Sangiovese based wine called Vin del Fattore which uses a technique called Governo all’Uso Toscano. On top of this we produce white wines such as Bianco di Pitigliano and Vermentino (also available as a late harvest and as a sparkling wine).

Company’s Philosophy
Since the start, over 40 years ago, our mission has been to produce high quality wines. We want to present our territory in the best way. We believe that our wines can be ambassadors of what Maremma has to offer both to those who visit our territory, and to those who want to travel in their mind, by tasting a glass of our wines at home or in their favourite restaurant.
Quality, however, is not easy to achieve. There’s lots of hard work behind a glass of high quality wine, and not only when harvest comes. Members of our winery are fully aware that quality is a continuous process, which starts in the vineyard and continues day after day, with members looking after their vineyards, following directions given by our agronomist based on grape variety, season, weather conditions and characteristics of each plot as well as new Internet of things directions (see below).
This is why our members follow strict rules throughout the year: this is essential so that the grapes collected when harvest time comes will be of the best quality. And of course this hard works must be rewarded. This is why it’s important for us to assess the grapes when they arrive, and reward each member based on the quality of the grapes they’ve produced. In doing so, we’re happy to say we’re among the wineries in Italy that pay the largest amount of money to their members– distributing to them our profits and thus sharing the result of our work with 170 families from our territory.
